“Radiation Shield Walling for Renewable Energy Applications.” What Now??!

Radiation Free Lakeland has just sent the following letter to Elite Precast whose website has the Orwellian NuSpeak headline : “Radiation Shield Walling for Renewable Energy Applications”

Sent by email today:

Dear Elite Precast,

It is misleading advertising to call nuclear “renewable” as your website states:

“Radiation Shield Walling for Renewable Energy Applications

High-Integrity Protection for High-Risk Environments

Elite Precast radiation shield walling offers a durable, high-density solution for shielding personnel, equipment, and infrastructure from ionising radiation in energy generation and storage environments.”

and goes on to say:

“Applications in Renewable Energy

  • Modular Nuclear & Fusion Sites – Shield reactor cores, fuel storage areas, and personnel walkways in Small Modular Reactor (SMR) and fusion energy developments.
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) – Use as fire- and radiation-protective barriers in high-voltage or high-capacity lithium and solid-state storage installations.
  • Grid-Scale Power Infrastructure – Provide additional shielding around high-voltage switching gear, transformers, or control rooms in critical substations.
  • Research & Test Facilities – Flexible protection for accelerator rooms, test chambers, and material handling zones within renewable R&D projects.” https://www.eliteprecast.co.uk/renewable-energy/radiation-shield-walling/

Nuclear is not considered renewable for good reason, the raw material, uranium is finite and is very rarely reused, indeed it cannot be reused without generating ever more damaging nuclear wastes.

As the BBC notes: “Like fossil fuels, nuclear power uses non-renewable energy resources, but unlike coal and gas power stations, nuclear plants do not produce greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide or methane during their operation.” https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd9047ggywyo

As the BBC notes, while greenhouse gases are not produced at the point of fission they are produced in the mining of uranium and in looking after the wastes. Sellafield for example has its own gas plant and multiple enormous diesel generators to look after the wastes on site. The concrete and steel required for uranium enrichment and nuclear plants require profligate use of steel and concrete the production of which causes C02 emissions.

We hope this “renewable” misleading statement can be rectified on your website and literature. We do have sympathy with you as we are painfully aware that the nuclear industry is falsely promoting itself as “clean” and we are addressing this.

“Renewable” becomes meaningless if it is allowed to be applied to the nuclear industry and we urge you to rectify this false statement as soon as possible.

Thank you

Marianne Birkby
