Call on Cumberland Council to hold vote on continued engagement with nuke dump plan
Following East Lindsey District Council’s decision to withdraw from the GDF process and the promise of the Leader of Lincolnshire County Council to call on his Executive post- election to do likewise, it is possible that, with a fair wind, Lincolnshire might soon be out of the picture.
This leaves Cumberland where democracy remains at a premium and in deficit. The new authority was formed of three former Councils, the larger Cumbria County Council and the two smaller District Councils of Allerdale and Copeland.
Cumberland decided to immerse itself in the GDF process, despite the fact that the Leader and Executive of Cumbria were resolutely opposed to any plan for a nuclear waste dump, and Copeland only agreed to go in on the decision of four Councillors, two of whom held positions receiving payments from the nuclear industry.
No vote on engagement has ever been held amongst all Councillors on Cumberland Council.
With NFLA support, campaigners at Radiation Free Lakeland have drafted and launched a petition calling on Cumberland Council to convene a belated special meeting of the Full Council to hold such a vote.
In such a vote, should most Councillors vote against continued engagement, in either Mid- or South- Copeland or both, then the process in that area would cease and NWS would withdraw.
This is because Cumberland must remain engaged as the sole Relevant Principal Local Authority for site investigations to continue.
