Anita says: Nearly 30 years ago in 1997 I gave evidence along with dozens of scientists at a Public Inquiry in Cleator Moor.
Cumbria County Council along with Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and many others fought to stop Nuclear Waste Services’ predecessor, NIREX, from drilling boreholes in West Cumbria to test “suitability” for a Low to Intermediate nuclear waste dump.
The Trojan Horse was a motif of the campaign. The Inquiry found West Cumbria was too dangerous, low to intermediate waste would percolate too fast to the surface.

What the Irish Times said:” in July 1996, a British government watchdog, the radioactive waste management committee, warned that access shafts designed in the company’s plans could form the main route for radionuclide emissions.
This was echoed later last year by a team of geologists from the University of Glasgow, who said radioactive waste could leak in as little as 40 years. The Scottish geologists claimed Nirex had been aware of the potential hazards for the last two years.”
