The Noxious Monster has a powerful thirst. Millions of gallons of water is consumed, more freshwater is sucked away every day than is used by many Gridlock towns (together).
Brambo had been chosen of all the Gnomes to journey to the thirsty mouth of the monster and bring back news. The journey overland began as soon as Brambo’s hand reached out of the water .
The tail of a curly haired black cow was grabbed. The startled cow, which had wandered into the water for a drink, had sped away with Brambo clinging onto her tail.
The Gnome had clung on till the black cow had reached the beginning of The Screes and had stopped unable to go further.
